Join us on November 15 for a Nonviolence teach-in and a screening of Love & Solidarity followed by a panel presentation and discussion on Nonviolence featuring Reverend James Lawson, David Huerta and Ilse Escobar.

Love & Solidarity is an exploration of nonviolence and organizing through the life and teachings of Rev. James Lawson. Lawson provided crucial strategic guidance while working with Martin Luther King, Jr., in southern freedom struggles and the Memphis sanitation strike of 1968. Moving to Los Angeles in 1974, Lawson continued his nonviolence organizing in multi-racial community and worker coalitions that have helped to remake the LA labor movement.

Through interviews and historical documents, acclaimed labor and civil rights historian Michael Honey and award-winning filmmaker Errol Webber put Lawson's discourse on nonviolent direct action on the front burner of today's struggles against economic inequality, racism and violence, and for human rights, peace, and economic justice.

Speakers:
Reverend Lawson helped launch the Nashville sit-in campaign that successfully desegregated the Woolworth’s lunch counter, inspiring a new generation of civil rights activists. He continued to work closely with Martin Luther King Jr. on civil rights campaigns, teaching workshops on nonviolence.The film, Love & Solidarity, is an exploration of nonviolence and organizing through the life and teachings of Rev. James Lawson.

David Huerta is President of the Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW) which more than 40,000 janitors, security officers, airport service workers, and other property service workers across California.

Ilse Escobar is a Parent and Community Organizer at United Teachers Los Angeles. Ilse is a UCLA Graduate and former member of UCLA IDEAS. She was highly involved in critical campaign to establish and defend the rights of undocumented youth in 2012 and more recently in the ICE OUT OF LA campaign.
